The Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, the Honourable Ahmed Shiyam, has met with young fishermen selected to participate in the Youth Internship Programme, a collaborative initiative between the Ministry and the World Bank’s Transform Project. During the meeting, Minister Shiyam formally presented certificates to the scholarship recipients, marking the official commencement of their professional development journey in the fisheries sector.
The Youth Internship Programme has been launched to support and empower aspiring young fishermen in the Maldives by providing practical training and professional development opportunities for those interested in pursuing careers in the fisheries sector. The initiative represents a significant step towards building a skilled and capable next generation of fishermen who will contribute to the sustainable development of the nation’s fisheries industry.
Prior to beginning their internships, participants successfully completed a General Navigation Course in R. Dhuvaafaru, facilitated by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard. This preparatory training equipped the interns with essential navigational skills and foundational knowledge required for their upcoming hands-on experiences at sea.
